Uncomfortable RGP Contact Lenses to Scleral Lenses: Doug’s Story

Doug is 47 years old and lives in Fredericksburg, Texas. A few years back Doug found out that he had keratoconus, and had to undergo a corneal transplant in his left eye. He also had a scar on his right cornea from the keratoconus. Doug had at best, 20/70 vision with his glasses, but he needed more. He needed to see more clearly for work.

Doug looked into different solutions to Keratoconus as well as what options were available to him after his corneal transplant surgery. Another Doctor ended up fitting Doug with a small, hard, gas permeable contact lens, but it was uncomfortable.

Doug ended up coming to see Doctor Oosterbaan at Eye Country Optometrists in Fredericksburg. He wanted to see if he could see better that the 20/70 vision he had with his glasses.

Dr. Oosterbaan fitted Doug for a scleral contact lens in his right eye. Doug was thrilled with how much more comfortable the scleral lens was to wear as opposed to the small hard gas permeable lens he was wearing before.

One of the reason scleral lenses are so comfortable is because they vault over the cornea and land on the sclera, which is the non-sensitive part of the eye. The result is super comfortable contact lenses.

Doctor Oosterbaan was able to design Doug’s lens to the exact measurements of his eye. He took a corneal topography map of 11,000 points on Robert’s cornea and individually designed the scleral lens to fit perfectly for his exact eye shape.

Doctor Oosterbaan was also able to fit Doug’s left eye with a scleral lens even after his corneal transplant. Since Doug had undergone a corneal transplant, it was crucial that the lens fit perfectly and did not touch down on the cornea. The precise measurement were taken and an individually designed lens was designed to match the contour of his eye even though he had a transplanted cornea.

Today Doug sees clearly all day and his vision is more comfortable than it has been in years. Doug says he can’t even feel the lenses on his eyes even after he works very long hours with the lenses in the entire time. According to Doug, the scleral lenses are so much more comfortable and do not dry out like his old gas permeable lenses did. Doug is very happy with his excellent vision and comfort and is now seeing better than he has ever seen before!
